Interesting front page article in today's New York Times on video game addiction in S. Korea.
Some highlights:
On the morning of Sept. 24 last year, they returned home after a 12-hour game session to find their actual daughter, a 3-month-old named Sa-rang — love in Korean — dead, shriveled with malnutrition.
Cyberbattles can spill into the real world. There have been several reports of players tracking down and attacking others for killing the online characters they had identified with for years.
Definitely a problem. My brother-in-law spent hours a day with an online character building up characters and selling them. He made as much as $30,000/year doing this. So you know that online gaming is hardcore. Plus, it's hard to get around it when so many of your friends are doing it. There are Starcraft leagues which attract serious sponsorship and have channel dedicated to Starcraft competitions and play-by-plays.
Things get started in PC rooms/cafe where you have ~60 people sitting in one place and you can get food and other amenities cheap and have access to superfast internet.
Another article from Yahoo news on video games as a learning tool:
Some highlights:
"People that play these fast-paced games have better vision, better attention and better cognition," said Daphne Bavelier, an assistant professor in the department of brain and cognitive science at the University of Rochester.
"As you know, most of us females just hate those action video games," she said. "You don't have to use shooting. You can use, for example, a princess which has a magic wand and whenever she touches something, it turns into a butterfly and sparkles."
Yep that would be much better than M.O.A. or C.O.D.
A teacher e-mailed a link to a short video a guy produced about this topic. Well made, and thought provoking. Seemed like a good place to share it with the TTers:
Some of you might not like it, but I think he has a good point. I have a similar history without the damaged bits.
I spend 6 hours a day on the computer give or take but honestly, I would much rather go on a killing spree in Modern Warfare 2 than read a book.
List of games I like playing:
Think Tanks
Crysis ( Can't wait for Crysis 2 in November )
Sauerbraten
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.
Grand Theft Auto IV
NFS Shift
Avatar Game
Modern Warfare 2
Yes, it's addiction but, I'm not missing out on any I would like to do.
That video does have a good point. Sitting alone in front of yor monitor could cause you to waste your life.
The only way to save yourself is to stop by dad's bar this july and meet smacky.
