Master Server?

How dependable is the master server these days? I've noticed all the shockwave servers seem to be gone, so how much longer is our master server going to live?

Who would be interested in a permanent solution to completely bypass the master server? I was thinking that a self-distributing list of server IPs might work. Basically, my idea is that a "current" list of servers would be hosted on every game server. The client would have a list of game servers and query to look for a "live" one, then download its more up-to-date server-list, in the process checking to see if each one of the servers was live and giving feed-back to the original game server. New servers would send out a query to the live servers to add to it and send a second query when they went offline.

Basically, my idea is a distributed server list that didn't rely on a master server at all. I know this idea has some obvious flaws in it, but I want to know if anyone thinks that this is worth pursuing before starting to work on this.

This is NOT just a suggestion for "someone else" that knows how to "script," by the way, I intend to try to write this if people think that this is worthwhile or necessary, and if the server hosters would be willing to implement such a thing. It would, for peace of mind, be completely open-source.

I was just wondering if it'd be worth working on a more elegant solution than a list of IPs posted on the forums. Basically a decentralized long-term master-server replacement. I'm worried as to how many people will go through the trouble to look up valid IPs to try to join a server that may or may not be full when/if the master server is taken offline. Some people seemed to express a fear that such an event might happen in the near future.

I don't think it's necessary _now_ as we still have a master server, but... meh

just a thought.

Snack made a topic about this a couple of months ago. When Music gets his master running, It'll become our backup if the GG one is taken down. We still need testers for it though.

I already have a replacement Master Server that I run. If Garagegames takes down their Master Server, for good, then I will put mine up.

So a replacement is made, no worries there. Its great that that people are thinking about the TT future.
