if the tree falls in a vacumn that is an even easier question. it makes no sound because there is no air for soundwaves. so if a tree falls where there is air it for sure makes a noise, if a tree is floating thru space and gets caught in the gravity of another object with no atmosphere it will hit it and not make a noise.

With the information I gave you, there is no way to tell what the tree falls on. You just know it falls in a forest. It could be a vacuum, causing no noise, or a potato chip, causing a little *crunch* when it lands (in addition to the whole falling tree noise). It's hell. Don't try and answer it.

Now this is proven

I. Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.

Basically this tells us that everything will try to stay as it is, so when a tree starts falling every branch will try to stay as it is. Some branches can bend and some can't, so while the tree is falling some branches will bend as they try to remain in the state they were while others who can't bend will go down with the tree immediately.

When something, even cells, get stretched it makes noise.

So we can conclude that a forest implies that it has undergrowth, the tree falls on something in which case it makes noise. Doesn't have to be hard ground, it will make noise anyway.

EDIT: Oh I forgot to tell you where you could hear the sound if someone had been there. Inside the tree the sound-waves will be produced even in a vacuum.

now the key word there is nobody, well there would be some form of life there. (ants elephants, even the tree ect...)

so you see, there is someone there to hear it, or see it, but scence we cant communicate with animals or the tree its self we can not prove that it was not heard.

So until we can talk to animals that may have seen this tree fall.... well we are still "stumbling around in the dark"

Are you serious with that? This debate has been the most intellectual, colorful thing that I have seen on these forums since I began visiting. It's clear that we can't discuss politics, as my thread on Huckabee proved (maybe i'm wrong, maybe it goes on in the dungeon, and it's not all "lets see what so and so replies to THIS"), so why would you deny me the opportunity to debate over a freaking tree falling in a forest?

The topic of a tree forest is not a broad enough topic to make a thread about, and is always going to be irrelevant so you can't post about it in a random thread without someone putting the annoying "off topic" smiley in their post. Where do you suppose I put it? Suggestions are welcomed.
