tx for your help folks...the dude at the computer store gave me an old soundblaster live card that works good with linux. i threw it in and everything runs smooth as glass!! things are so smooth and fast its gonna take a little getting used to!!
bc, what exactly is the problem you are having? are you able to get ubuntu installed? if not try selecting the second option from the cd bootloader and boot into safe graphics mode. your usb stick should mount on its own and have a shortcut on the desktop. if it does you can install ubuntu there (although ive never done it)

Not so sure Ubuntu has a lot for you in that capacity. Look into DSL, I believe its debian as well. http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

anyone figured out how to video chat using linux? i know u can voice chat with skype and i know you can use ekiga and some other internet video phone utilities but you cant expect the rest of the world to use something other than the norm.
im talking about video chatting with my friends on MSN, Y!, or AIM. is this possible? if not, can it be done i WINE?
ive made the decision that windows sucks so bad that i shouldnt have to use it unless im getting paid at the same time. so at work i use all ms software. otherwise im staying away from it.

Good god.
Linux is probably great if its the only thing on your hard drive, but I've had nothing but headaches with Live CD/memory-stick/persistent mode. Its even broken on the latest Ubuntu 7.04!
Macintosh Rules. They made a utility (Bootcamp) that allows me to run Windows and MacOS off the same hard drive. And it was easy, without one single terminal command.
I'm going run a sata cable out of my Mac mini so I can switch hard drives in order to run Linux. It seems easier than all the hocus pocus that takes several days for the geeks on the forums to figure out.

Can you run you run Mac OS off of a USB stick? I doubt it. Those "geeks on the forums" are volunteering their time to help you. Linux can easily co-exist with other operating systems. You can install it on your current hard drive if you have space. Mac OS and Windows, on the other hand, don't play as nicely with other OS's.

I'm not buying the "easily" part of your statement. Those geeks seem to be primarily wallowing in geekishness. They can't or don't seem to want to write how-tos for newbs.
Yes, you can run Mac OS on external drives as long as they're big enough (3-4 GB min.). I think the Mac OS has historically been the friendliest external boot OS.
