Maybe I"ve spent too long in front of the computer today. I'm trying to find a series of school related names for a pumpkin variety. I camp across this one after typing in synonyms for Lunch Pail.

i don't see that as an obvious lie only because the presumption is you are only counting the paper bag as waste.
what about the empty juice box, the apple core, the banana peal, the cardboard backing that held the icing laden cupcake treat, etc etc. it all goes in the trash and it eventually adds up to some weight.
i'm not saying there aren't egregious and obvious lies out there but i think this may be more of a case of piss poor online reporting where providing fact based details to back up the story is just non existent.
When I was in school the lunch program actually did a little cooking. The school lunch program has prepackaged food delivered and they put it on a steam bath. They don't even have a sink, stove or oven. They generally charge $3 per day for a lunchable and a juice box.
^Same here..4 kids per day. We do however use lunch bags, Vera Bradleys for the girls, star wars for my son..don't want to piss off any tree huggers, we only generate 200 lbs of trash per year.
School lunch... bleccch. But they do cook at my school.

^Ever listen to Clark Howard? He's a pretty sensible financial guy. There was a topic like discussed on his show the other day. Apparently it's some sort of plan to get you to change your mortgage to some sort of home equity credit line. I tried to find it on his website but didn't have time to look in detail.
