Roo, many thanks for the info

I'm trying both the TCP Recieve tweak and the prefs.cs tweak now.

I'll let you know how I get on. :)

1- @ NUTS and Roos: Are these the same settings we've been using in PSL?
2- Is it possible to have a script monitoring the prefs, etc. files of the players for possible cheat? A bit like the IP script to ban folks?
3- NUTS: I know enough of Cadc to say that if he lags, it's not on purpose, and that I'd put my hand in fire that he does not 'cheat'. And yes, the man got skills.
4- About bragging: I'm bragging the most in here, but no one pays attention nor notice it.
5- Yes lag sucks but whatever, I'm here to enjoy the game, I don't care that much if I win or lose, or if so and so lag; I won't let it ruin my playtime.

I'd much much much rather have a lagger than an empty spot in a game!

Thanks all for trying to find a solution. :tankerbravo:

a la PunkBuster?

Possible? Yea, BUT as the prefs are client sided everyone that went into one of those "cheat-protected servers" would have to have a script installed, INCLUDING the hoster
Other than that, it is pretty possible, the hardest would be to figure out a way to BOTH protect the client from sending important preferences (Passwords for example) and protect the script at the same time from people trying to trick it... Even tough I have some ideas on my mind on how to do that...

For the script I agree with artcrazy could be possible. We had tried doing a script that would check for dropped packets. That didn't seem to work. I think in retrospect we were trying o find the TCP packets,d'oh. We should be looking for the UDP information. I know at one point Me, dash, Roo, BC and Rx were madly emailing each other about the settings and such for PSL. I remember BC had run some test about the data increase that happened when the server and the players increased the data sends and such, it was unreal. That led to the discussion of doing some scripts to check prefs. dash state he would lok into but has pretty much disappeared (I miss dashy).

Personally I don't think that the size of the TT folder really matters to much. The inforamation is called when entering a game what is needed.

Yes, I too would rather a "lagger" played then an empty spot. Just trying to increase enjoyment for all and hopefully have a lot less empty spots.

The script is actually pretty simply, hardest things would be security (so people dont trick the script)

The only problem is that it'd make the private servers even more "private", as everyone that enters them would have to have the script installed... For leagues it wouldn't be a problem tough, as that could easily be a requirement...

It may be a good thing, but can wefirst evaluate how many people around here do 'cheat'? It's like locking everyone in to catch one thief. You guys that's been on the file - what is it, 1? 3? 5? folks 'cheating'?

Wouldn't it be easier to have a 'punkbuster' script to check a suspicious prefs file, and if a 'cheater' is caught, he gets perma-ban plus a nice mention on PTT?

Well thats what I ultimately had in mind. Was a check of the persons ports. If they were not turned up they would not be able to enter.

The other script I was thinking about would check a persons dropped UDP packets. If they were dropping a certain amount they would be asked to fix and re-enter.
