OK Nuts you are going to have to work with me on this, again, thanks for the help.
I have read links & what you have posted, most is at a higher level than I can understand, but I have OofFa who is more knowlegeable on IT issues.
I have a good ISP with maximum download speed available in UK (for my location to hub)
We have done a trace, we go through 25 ish nodes & a not very direct route. This could cause Latency, depending on hub traffic? Is there any way to get a more direct route?
My PC is not bad 2.2Gb Athlon, graphics card is not bad. I don't have anything running other than TT. I did have a problem with my virus checker, but I have sorted this.
Then the tricky bit for me. I have a good quality wireless router & a software firewall. You mention opening ports. Could you advise in laymans terms & then I can look into it.
My problem is say Dash & a full sever of 13. Is this then the same for everyone, the server downgrading to the worst connection of the 13? I then have specific players who I seem to die instntly with. I have mentioned this to say Niko (not implying cheat in ANY way) as when he hits me his bullets are like one long piiiing.
My ping to ost servers is usually 170 ish, ut as you say this is irrelevant, is it not the distance but the nodes it travels through?
I am thinking that I may need a higher level of expertise to get any improvements, but I am more than willing to learn & try to get the most from my TT experience.

@gray
I believe Wide Open west is only available in some of the western suburbs like Aurora/Naperville.
@CADC
The best two services in this area right now are Comcast which has a 8mb download service and Wide Open West which has a 6mb download service.I'm looking at a nice suburb close to Chicago, I'll have to test the connections before I decide.

Even if TT is reading all of the elements in the game, it only has to track the elements being used in that particular game. If it were due to objects or amount of objects being used in a game then you'd think the stock maps would be lag-free. Unfortunately in my experiences, I recall most of the horrid lag games have been on maps that came with the game. This is very very frustrating in TBM where accuracy is everything.[/quote]For once, I think you've made a very valid point Nuts, my entire TT directory is now 9 Megs, That's quite a bit of info to manage while playing.

You smell that?
Do you smell that?
Napalm, son.
Nothing else in the world smells like that.
I love the smell of Napalm in the morning!

Yes lag destroys the game but we cannot blame a tanker for it; not everyone can afford a cable connection in a big city hub.
About setting cheats: so one could change his setting and get a 'lag shield'? Man that would suck - I hate when my game is lagging, even if it's supposed to give me a lag power-up, I never saw the advantage of playing in choppiness - gives me an headache if anything.

^ i'm not so sure Napalm, now that I've loaded so much into my TT directory, it takes my comp a little longer to open TT (say 12 or more seconds the first time I open it for the day, after that, it loads pretty much in 3 secs any time after)

No, I agree that the initial launching of the application may slow down as it does have to read all of the objects, which there are considerably more of these days. Once in the game it does nothing with the information of the items not in the current game.
I'm guessing because I didn't write the program, but I think it's loading all of the items for the game while it's creating the .ml files upon entering the server.
If you have an excess amount of objects in your mod (like the many stones I had piled in the Stonewalled mod of mine) you will certainly see a performance hit. When I originally created that mod I had an enormous amount of stones (hehe he said stones) and it was almost impossible to just navigate around in TGE. Seeing that I decided to go another way with it which made it playable.
I guess "if you don't need it, don't put it in" would be a good policy to go by.

I agree with Nappy
The 9 megs mentioned by Cadc are not a determinining factor
Here are 2 things that will help as a player and 1 that will help as a Hoster
Player tweaks
1. I have worked with European and Israeli players and have found this an excellant
tweak. In some cases doubling their Frame Rate
Go here http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/
Then.....
Scroll down the webpage and use the "packet size tweak" (if on windows)
that best applies to your situation
If on Mac or linux the same principles apply
Open you incoming Internet Recive packet size
2. Also I have seen significant gains in performance opening the packet size in
ThinkTanks
Go to ~/game/client/prefs.cs
Change these lines from this:
$pref::Net::PacketRateToClient = "10";
$pref::Net::PacketRateToServer = "16";
$pref::Net::PacketSize = "200";
To This:
$pref::Net::PacketRateToClient = "32";
$pref::Net::PacketRateToServer = "32";
$pref::Net::PacketSize = "450";
Hoster - Modder tweak
In the mis file the best performance for any mission (FPS) =
Visibility = 500
Fog distance = 300
