I use Avast Antivirus. It's free to home computers updates very frequently and has done a great job on keeping my computer clean. It also has a skinable interface so if you don't like how the default works just download another one. As for spy/ad/malware I use a combination of Lavasoft's Adaware and Spyware S&D. I've found that what one misses the other finds.
All of these programs are free to the home user and I have found this extremely effective in keeping my computer clean. Another benifit is all the programs are small and don't require much system space.

antivirus: AVG (free.grisoft.com) -FREE
firewall: zonealarm (zonelabs.com) -FREE
spyware: spyware doctor (pctools.com) $30 - not free but none of the free tools will do as good a job. in fact, none of the free tools have active monitoring that keeps most spyware out in the first place. spysweeper is also good. nothing besides these two tools is worth a penny

99 Bottles of beer on the wall....
I use Zone Alarm. It doesn't delete the bad stuff, but I'm good with computer cleanouts and I can track it down manually. It's effective if you really know what your doing with your computer...

Man I wouldn't recommended Zone Alarm to my wost enemy, I tried it once and it messed up my PC something terrible.
I have tons of security settings enabled\disabled with zonealarm, and i can control pretty much everything..Yarkl wrote:I use Zone Alarm. The downside, is deletion of stuff, and it requires a brain to use.
I use an illegal lifetime copy of ZoneAlarm® Internet Security Suite
