thanks everyone, i downloaded the mod pack and everything was fine.

I have cable and can get 250kb/s down. Often my limit is the servers and not my connection

The mod pack is a small part of your waiting to get into modded servers. You really need the Upgrade Pack ( in Dazzles first link. Mod pack saves maybe 3 minutes per map. Upgrade pack can save you hours. This is a one time upgrade and like Dazz says, keep up with new maps by periodically downloading from the recent mods link.
